01 — The basics

What is PAT Testing?

Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) refers to the in-service inspection and testing of hand-held, portable and plug-in electrical equipment.

Business owners, directors, managers and safety officers in Ireland have the responsibility to ensure that PAT Testing of all electrical equipment used in a work environment forms part of the workplace health and safety inspection schedule. This is a requirement under the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2007 and S.I. 732 of the Act, which specifies that all appliances should be tested regularly with records maintained for five years.
